Art sales are not only sales of created works. There are other aspects of the art business that draw an income. What are they?

There are no guarantees in life, but I'm trying to spend equal time creating and marketing. I just did a live painting on a busy street with a lot of walking traffic. It seemed to bring a lot of interest. I'll have to let you know if it translates to sales and/or commissions. Keeping my fingers crossed. :)

The money is generated by the art world superhuman called the art dealer/promoter. Not only do they provide access to buyers but also provide a large variety of services for which they charge.

When I'm not creating or selling art I'm teaching it. I'm making most of my income from teaching oil and acrylic painting. I'm also a framer and work at that part time in a local frame shop.

Darice, I am on FAA and have found it to be very slow in sales, although, activity is not too bad. How long did it take you to sell on the site?

It is a basic truth that artists are career people and as such must operate their studio as a business just as in the successful artist's studios of today and back to Da Vinci and beyond. And you are right, Leah, I too believe about fifty percent of working time needs to be on the business side which for us includes everything from buying the canvas and materials to framing the finished work to cataloging, photographing and placing the work on the market. Following that there is the matter of proper storage or display and keeping the pieces clean and in pristine condition. Yes. Half our work time would be barely enough time.
